Offshore Engineer Jobs: Pay Scale and Career Progression

Marine engineering on offshore support vessels follows the same rank structure and certificate pathway as deep sea shipping. The technical environment and the work characteristics are different enough that the transition requires genuine adaptation.

The Technical Environment

Diesel-electric power plants for DP capability. Multiple generator sets in parallel with sophisticated load sharing and automatic fault response. DP thruster management. Thruster seal and bearing maintenance. AHTS vessels add enormous hydraulic anchor handling winch systems.

The power management challenge on an offshore vessel is more complex than on a conventional main-engine-and-gearbox cargo ship. Second engineers on offshore vessels manage a power plant that responds to DP positioning demands continuously.

The Ranks

Third Engineer typically owns specific systems including DP thruster maintenance.

Second Engineer manages day-to-day maintenance and engine room operations. Planned maintenance on offshore vessels is more intensive than cargo ships partly because operators have stricter equipment reliability requirements. A failure that sidelines the vessel costs the client money.

Chief Engineer combines technical management with extensive administrative responsibility. Planned maintenance compliance, budget, technical superintendent communication, contractor management in port.

Pay

North Sea monthly rates.

Third Engineer: $5,000 to $8,000 Second Engineer: $8,000 to $12,000 Chief Engineer: $13,000 to $18,000

Competitive with tanker rates at equivalent level and better than dry cargo equivalents.

Getting Into Offshore Engineering

STCW engineering certificates from cargo ship backgrounds are accepted by offshore operators. DP engineering familiarisation training, while not a mandatory qualification, demonstrates awareness of offshore-specific requirements.

The first offshore contract is the main barrier. After it the experience profile changes.
