Manning Agency Route
Not all agencies handle offshore. Agencies primarily placing cargo ship crew occasionally have offshore vacancies. Agencies that work specifically with offshore operators have them consistently.
In the North Sea market, agencies with relationships with Solstad, DOF, Bourbon, Tidewater and Siem Offshore are worth identifying. The relationships between specific agencies and specific operators are known in the offshore community. Seafarer forums and conversations with officers who have worked for particular companies surface this information.
Direct Operator Approaches
Solstad Offshore has a crewing department processing direct applications and has recruitment offices in key markets.
DOF Subsea has its own crewing structure. For subsea specialist positions direct approaches to DOF are realistic.
Tidewater, one of the largest offshore vessel operators globally, has internal crewing departments across regional operations.
Starting at the operator’s website and finding the crewing department contact is straightforward for most major offshore operators.
The DP Certificate Question
Officers applying for offshore positions without a DP certificate should be clear about where they are in the process. Starting the introductory course and having the logbook shows commitment. Saying you intend to get the certificate without having started does not.
Some offshore operators take watchkeeping officers early in their DP process on vessels where not all watches require DP operation. This can be the entry point allowing sea time to accumulate toward the full certificate.
